 DEFINITIONPAN este acronimul folosit pentru poliacrilonitril, deci fibrele PAN sunt fibre realizate din acest polimer sintetic, organic, semi-cristalin, cu formula chimica ((C3H3N)n). Este un polimer termoplastic, dar se descompune inainte de topire. Fibrele PAN sunt folosite ca precursori pentru fibrele de carbon de calitate superioara. in acest scop, PAN este mai intai oxidat termic cu formarea PANOX (fibre PAN oxidate), apoi are loc carbonizarea la temperaturi de peste 1000 ?C, in atmosfera inerta.
