DEFINITIONA light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when connected to a DC (Direct Current) power source. This light is created by emitting energy released by electrons during recombination with donors. Given the semiconductor structure, the LED has an anode and a cathode terminal. Hence the right voltage polarity has to be observed (Anode +, Cathode -). The LEDs are characterized by a voltage drop. The voltage drop varies according to the different colours of the LEDs, which are between 1.5 - 3.5 V. Based on the diode material, the emitted light has a specific wavelength and thus a particular colour.
