DEFINITIONIn statistics, response surface methodology explores the relationships between several input parameters and one or more result variables. The main idea of RSM is to use a sequence of designed experiments to obtain an optimal response. RSM represents an analytic relation of the result variable related to the input parameters, usually a polynomic equation of first or second degree, which models the process. The coefficients are computed by regression, based on the values of the experimental matrix. The response surface model may be further used to optimize the physical process, by e.g. MinMax analysis. It is a very effective technique for mapping both the functional behavior of a system relative to parameter values and the variability of the behavior.
